We have not had word on any specific participation from The Big Bang Theory cast or production team, but it is very likely that there will be updates from CBS about the show. Hopefully we will see some great articles come out this coming week.
Don’t forget that the Television Critic’s 30th Annual Awards are also being held July 19, 2014 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Both The Big Bang Theory, for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and Jim Parsons, for Individual Achievement in Comedy, have been nominated for awards.
Terry Crews, from Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be hosting the event, which will not be televised. The event is an invite-only event and hopefully we will get some media feed following the event so we can update our readers on the outcome.
CBS TOUR UPDATE
CBS provided updates to the Television Critics Association (TCA). The CBS Tour started out with an update from Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment. She was followed by panels from Madame Secretary, the McCarthys, NCIS: New Orleans, Scorpion, and Battle Creek.
In Tassler’s update she states that the CBS is not worried about coming to an agreement with the cast of The Big Bang Theory by the time the show is to begin production starting July 30th. She is certain agreements will all be reached and there will not be any production delays.
Multi-cam comedies are what CBS excels at and they will continue to deliver multi-cam productions. CBS
“has a legacy of building strong comedies and hope to continue to do so.”
Nina then touched on the late night talk show replacements that CBS is faced with filling and mentioned that the transition from Dave Letterman to Stephen Colbert was not specific, but:
“we’re having preliminary conversations with Stephen, very early conversations about format,” said Tassler. “We know he’s retiring his character on Comedy Central. He does want to have an interview format. As to dates, we’re in the middle of those conversations right now.”
When asked about replacing the 12:30 slot held by Craig Ferguson, her response was more intriguing in saying it could be someone from politics or from comedy, but she continued to add:
We’re looking at it through a very different lens,” she said. “There is a knee-jerk reaction to go for a traditional behind the desk format, but we’re looking at the comic world, maybe the political world. We’re keeping an open mind. We’re doing our homework. We want to make the right decision.”
Tassler expressed her disappointment with the Television Academy of Arts & Sciences voters for their lack of support for “The Good Wife” for Best Drama category.
“I’m still really pissed” Tassler expressed. You look at what ‘The Good Wife’ does every year. We have 22 episodes. It’s so much more demanding, so much more difficult. Right now, everybody’s playing in the same sandbox… It’s something that should be looked at.”
Tassler seemed to be less comfortable when approached on the subject of diversity. While she defended her position about CBS being committed to diversity her defense was not viewed quite as competitive as ABC’s position. She argued that:
You look at the length and breadth of the network, from sun up to sun down,” she said, pointing to “The Talk” as one of the most diverse shows on TV, and their drama leads Halle Berry, Lucy Liu and Maggie Q. “These are formidable characters in lead roles. But season to season, we don’t come out of pilot season or the launch of any show to say we’re good. We don’t look at fall as the defining mark as giving us a quota.”
Tassler responded to queries about Vince Gilligan’s role in Battle Creek, a role he has downplayed his level of involvement. Tassler danced around it but emphasized the following:
David Shore is the showrunner and primary steward of “Battle Creek,” based on a script that Gilligan wrote 14 years ago, well before “Breaking Bad.”
Tassler also revealed that Two-and-a-Half Men will have an Alan-Walden gay-adoption storyline this final season of the show. Leaving everyone intrigued for more, the update wrapped up and led to the subsequent panels.
Just a quick note to shout out that Laurie Metcalf is very open to reprising her role as Mary Cooper on The Big Bang Theory and would love to be called to do so. Also of interest was the Scorpion panel that says it is very much like The Big Bang Theory, only “out in the field”. Sounds like an intriguing show.

President and CEO of CBS, Leslie Mooves, believes that Thursday Night Football will be the next big hit for the season. He believes it is a “sure thing” and a great way to “start the weekend”.
Thursday night football is in high demand, according to Moonves. When asked about the network “auditioning” for the rights to air Thursday Night Football on CBS longer-term, Moonves responded:
“It is our job to show the NFL how great it’s going to be,” Moonves said. “We’re confident at the end of the year they’re going to feel like CBS did a tremendous job.”
Moonves was asked if CBS would entertain a longer-season of airing the games and he replied:
“If the NFL would like to go longer we’d certainly be interested in talking to them.”
Moonves went on to describe the wiring of a player to give moment-by-moment play activity, using state of the art technology and cameras. He also vowed to use CBS talent to promote the games and would also include football in some of the CBS scripted shows.
