Jimmy Kimmel is a huge Bob Newhart fan, and there’s a good reason why. He owes the guy his life.
Speaking with Newhart on Thursday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel revealed that a “Bob Newhart Show” joke actually got him out of a dangerous situation in high school. And unlike the famous “Newhart” series finale, this wasn’t a dream. It actually happened.
Mayim Bialik, best known for her roles as Blossom in the series Blossom and as Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory, was the keynote speaker addressing the attendees of the Evolution Expo held in Oakland, CA.
Evolution Expo is both a fun event for everyone, especially fans of Science Fiction, but also a charitable event who has a goal to uplift and inspire young people to pursue the math and science arts by realizing the potential of those endeavors in an entertaining and interactive event. Activities include doing workshops where you can do “scene work” as if cast in a Science Fiction film or TV show; hard science presentations by real scientists and astronauts who advise the film and television industry; and the Roddenberry Presentation which covers everything from creating and merchandising Science Fiction products to International space laws and everything in between.
There are special events for children which include creating robots, going to a planetarium, attending brainstorming sessions with peers their age to discuss brainstorming Science Fiction ideas or creations, and problem solving in a “think tank” ideas using scientific and science fiction ideas, plus if under the age of 10, be photographed with astronauts.
Mayim, brings her wealth of experience as not only a scientist, spokes-person for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), but as a mother and best-selling authoress who has many altruistic endeavors, but also as a huge fan of Science Fiction genre.
Mayim raised over $25,000 for seven (7) charities last evening.
After the disappointing finale of EIFF 2013 (if nothing else, Not Another Happy Ending was at least appropriately titled), it perhaps seems a risky move to sign-off this year’s festival with another romantic comedy. Written by and starring The Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg, who also co-helms with his wife Jocelyn Towne, 2014’s offering We’ll Never Have Paris bills itself as being “based on true story, unfortunately.” And though the film is unlikely to set many viewers’ worlds on fire, it is its moments of truthfulness that see it shift a small step above its predecessor.
Let’s be clear, the film certainly isn’t problem free. Essentially the story of how Quinn (Helberg) accidentally breaks-up with his long-time girlfriend, Devon (Melanie Lynskey), after discovering his attractive co-worker, Kelsey (Maggie Grace), is infatuated with him, our protagonist is introduced far too briefly to draw much initial sympathy. Other than possessing the impulses of the archetypal ‘man’, there seems to be little justifying Quinn’s actions – especially when he then pursues relations with Kelsey pretty much immediately. Further, though Lynskey makes a charming and refreshingly normal female match for Helberg, the portrayal of women remains off-balance, many of them seemingly powerless to resist Quinn, despite his obvious flaws.
The final hours of EIFF are upon us! Our Web Editor, Nicola Balkind, recounts the Fest and looks forward to tonight’s closing festivities.
I come to you with a last minute blog today to encourage you to take advantage of the final selection of films and events in our 2014 programme.
The 68th Edinburgh International Film Festival has been a blast, with fantastic Hero Hangout guests including Don Johnson and Elijah Wood. Today the final Hero Hangout, presented by EIFF and Empire, took place with the co-directors of tonight’s Closing Night Gala film, Simon Helberg and Jocelyn Towne.
Empire journliast Helen O’Hara chaired the event, taking Simon Helberg through a career retrospective Q&A from his traumatic-sounding drama school experience, through web series work, and into projects as diverse as hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory and the Coen Brothers’ film A Serious Man.
Joined by his wife Jocelyn Towne, The Big Bang Theory‘s Simon Helberg turns director with autobiographical romantic comedy We’ll Never Have Paris. Helberg supposedly bases his film on a true story, making this charmless and aimless picture all the more tragic.
Neurotic thirty-something Quinn (Helberg) is planning on popping the question to his girlfriend of ten years Devon (Melanie Lynskey), until his colleague (Maggie Grace) confesses her love for him. This new found revelation results in the nervous Quinn botching his proposal and breaking-up with Devon. However, he realises he has made a huge mistake and attempts to win her back.
We’ll Never Have Paris is a romantic comedy with no focus, a film that simply drifts like its central character’s indecision. Quinn is a frustrating protagonist who boasts a self-deprecation that masks how a vile character he actually is. He’s needy, neurotic, and throughout the course of the film treats his girlfriend like dirt. This is the sort of man that kicks off at the thought of his girlfriend simply meeting with another man, whilst in the past week has slept with two other women. Helberg appears to be going for a quick-talking, Woody Allen like character but I don’t remember any of Allen’s characters being so slimy.
Simon Helberg and Jocelyn Towne are in Scotland attending the Edinburgh International Film Festival where their film was chosen to close the event. It is a deep honor to be chosen to close this prestigious event.

The past week on The Bazinga Cast, has been VERYactive. We are very grateful for this. Thank you everyone who looked at one of our posts, and it didn’t have to be one of the ones we have listed above.
