Variety: Ensemble TV Actors Shine in Smaller Roles

June 10, 2014 | 10:00AM PT |Paige Albiniak |@paigea

Let’s be honest: While it’s great to win an Emmy — any Emmy — almost every actor would prefer a leading role to a supporting one.

That said, some of today’s top movie stars got their start in a supporting TV role. Woody Harrelson first came to fame playing the dim but sweet Woody on “Cheers,” a role for which he was nominated for six Emmys and won once (Harrelson also was nominated in 2012 for playing Steve Schmidt in HBO’s “Game Change”). Two-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper was once Sydney Bristow’s (Jennifer Garner) best friend on J.J. Abrams’ “Alias.” And even Leonardo DiCaprio got his start playing foster child Luke Brower on “Growing Pains.”

So it’s not all bad playing second fiddle. After all, Lupita Nyong’o made quite a splash as the stylish newcomer and ultimately Oscar’s supporting actress.

Still, it can be hard to break out of a supporting-role perception. This season, Sean Hayes, famous for playing the flamboyant Jack on NBC’s “Will & Grace,” tried to lead a sitcom on NBC’s “Sean Saves the World” but in the end, NBC couldn’t save the show.

But that also goes to show how sometimes a supporting role can feature just the right amount of a character; Hayes and Megan Mullally won Emmys for “Will & Grace” but would anyone want to watch a show called “Jack & Karen”? Ken Jeong is used sparingly on “Community” to great effect, but that doesn’t mean you’d want to watch an entire show about Senor Chang.

“When you are casting any show, you are always looking for the best person for the job,” says Keli Lee, ABC’s executive VP of casting. “There are so many actors who play supporting characters, and when they find the right role, they really break out.”

That’s certainly been true for the previously lesser-known members of the “Modern Family” cast, including two-time Emmy winner Eric Stonestreet and one-time winner Ty Burrell. “Girls”’ Adam Driver started out playing Hannah Horvath’s (Lena Dunham) douche-bag hook-up, but went on to become one of the cast’s key members. Driver also has landed plum roles in several movies, including the villain in Abrams’ upcoming addition to the “Star Wars” saga and the baby brother in the upcoming “This Is Where I Leave You.”

The supporting actor in a comedy category has been full of “Modern Family” men since the show premiered in 2009. Last year, however, “Veep” thesp Tony Hale managed to upset, finally snatching the trophy away from the “Modern Family” monopoly.

This year, Hale is expected to be back, along with Driver and the “Modern Family” trio of Burrell, Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Stonestreet and Ferguson just came off a strong season-long arc in which their two characters, Cam and Mitchell, got married.

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” supporting player Andre Braugher could also enter the category after the show’s surprise Golden Globe win last January.

“Modern Family” also stacks the distaff deck, with both Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara consistent nominees and Bowen taking home the trophy in 2011 and 2012. Last year, “Nurse Jackie” star Merritt Wever came in from cable for the steal. This season, all three of those women are expected to be back, along with two of last year’s other nominees, “Veep” actress Anna Chlumsky and Mayim Bialik of “The Big Bang Theory.”

Still, the category is ripe for change, and Allison Janney of “Mom” or Margo Martindale of “The Millers” — both previous Emmy winners — might just be the women to do it. Or Bialik’s co-stars Melissa Rauch and Kaley Cuoco could land their first noms for “The Big Bang Theory.”

Dramas continue to flourish across the TV landscape, and there are several supporting actor nominations that are all but guaranteed: two-time winner Aaron Paul in his final performance as Jesse Pinkman on “Breaking Bad” and Peter Dinklage, who continues to shine as Tyrion Lannister on “Game of Thrones.” The man who plays his brother, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, could also credibly argue for a nod. Also look for Jon Voight, who stole scene after scene on the Showtime drama “Ray Donovan.”

Last year’s winner, Bobby Cannavale — who was Emmy nominated in 2013 both for his performance on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie” — won’t be back, but another “Boardwalk Empire” cast member, Jeffrey Wright, is being eyed as a potential nominee.

Other possibilities include Mandy Patinkin of “Homeland,” Noah Emmerich on “The Americans,” Peter Sarsgaard of “The Killing” and Mads Mikkelsen of “Hannibal.” Some shows could offer more than one nominee, such as “The Good Wife” actors Josh Charles and Alan Cumming and Paul’s “Breaking Bad” co-star Dean Norris, whose tragic death in the final season was a heartbreaking moment.

For the women, Anna Gunn of “Breaking Bad” is widely expected to repeat her win in this category. Other names being mentioned include perennial “Downton Abbey” favorite Maggie Smith, as well as Christine Baranski and Archie Panjabi of “The Good Wife” and Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey of “Game of Thrones.”

Two men who won’t be found among the supporting actor nominees: “True Detective’s” Matthew McConaughey and the aforementioned Harrelson. While McConaughey is expected to give “Breaking Bad’s” three-time winner Bryan Cranston a run for his money in the lead actor category, Harrelson also is being submitted as lead actor in a drama.

Whether the two stars will split the Academy’s vote remains to be seen, but McConaughey’s was the showier role, and thus the bigger Emmy bait. The choice begs the question: would they be better off to submit McConaughey as lead and Harrelson as supporting and go for two?

Last year, Emmy and HBO saw a similar situation with two movie stars — Michael Douglas and Matt Damon — submitted as leads in a movie or mini-series for “Behind the Candelabra.” Douglas, who played Liberace, swept most of the awards while Damon graciously cheered him on.

Examiner.com AXS Entertainment: Jim Parsons on his role in ‘The Normal Heart’: ‘It was very exciting

June 17, 2014

Jim Parsons is still relishing from being apart of the HBO television movie adaptation of Larry Kramer’s Tony-winning Broadway drama, “The Normal Heart.” As part of a star-studded cast, Parsons performance as AIDS activist Tommy Boatwright has etched a notch in his resume as a dramatic actor. In an interview published by Deadline Monday, Parsons talked about being apart of the project and transitioning a role he played on Broadway to film.

Parsons, who played Tommy on Broadway, felt it was important to reprise the role in the Ryan Murphy produced film. Not only did he have a good grip on the character, he felt it would be a great chance for him to display his acting versatility. As a multiple Emmy winner for his comedic role on “The Big Bang Theory,” working on “The Normal Heart” gave him a chance to show his dramatic side.

Parson’s previous work with Kramer played a role in him landing the role in the film. It not only created a familiarity between Kramer and Parson’s work, it also convinced Murphy to reach out to the Emmy winning actor. In the interview he talks about his first meeting with the “Glee” creator.

“I went to his office (and) adored him immediately,” said Parsons. “ He had such gravity, such intelligence. I remember leaving there (thinking), ‘He’s going to make a beautiful film.’ What I didn’t know, though – and this is so Hollywood – was whether I was playing this part or not. I think he asked if I would be interested in playing it, and I’m sure I said yes.”

Parsons not only got to play the character he was so familiar with, he got to travel new distances with the character in the film as the role was beefed up a bit by Kramer. Parsons said he found “it was very exciting” to be apart of such an important piece of material in a film that has touched so many people. It is also a film that had an impact on the actors. Matt Bomer is still holding onto his role as Felix Turner and Parsons also hopes to extend the experience.

When asked about a possible Emmy nomination he says, “If the fates decide that I should get to continue on this journey through an awards season, I can only imagine that would feel like a great extension of this. I enjoy being associated with this project, and the other people with it, so much that anything that extends that time where you get to attend events together in support, or in celebration, of the project would be very meaningful.”

Mayim Bialik “treats” fans to a four-course dinner

Mayim Bialik, along with the Chef of Mowhawk Bend Restaurant treated fans last evening to a four-course dinner.   We have one fans account of the evening below.

Mayim at Mowhawk Restaurant presenting meals from her book Mayim’s Vegan Table on June 16, 2014.

Mayim giving insight on a recipe at last night’s dinner at Mowhawk Bend Restaurant in Los Angeles, CA

It was a 4-course vegan meal. Before every meal was served, she would talk a little bit about the course and her inspiration for it or whatnot. The first meal was a Matzoh ball soup, which I believe she said was a comforting food and something she ate a lot of after her car accident. The second course was a rainbow cabbage salad with tahini-lemon. She talked about trying to get her kids to eat a salad as big as their heads once a day. The festive colors of the salad make it a little easier. The third course was root vegetable latkes with vegan sour cream, vegetable tzimmes, and eggplant and red pepper crostini. She said the latkes are also really good with ketchup. The last course was dessert, a plum and walnut crisp. She talked about how much she loves plums and how her ex mother-in-law has a plum tree in her backyard.

After all the courses, there was a short Q&A section. I knew I wanted to ask her a question mainly because I wanted to thank her for playing Amy, so my hand shot up right away. She looked right at me, said she has a question, and then a guy with a microphone came to me. I told her first off I can’t ask you a question here without telling you how much I enjoy your portrayal of Amy on the Big Bang Theory and thank you for doing so. Everyone clapped and then I asked my question. Are there any recipes that her kids love to eat but she can’t stand? She said her younger son likes to eat a lot of fried foods and that her sons sometimes only want the filling of her Sheppard’s pie recipe.

There was a few other questions regarding raising kids vegan and how she makes it work. At the end she thanked the chef for making her delicious recipes and the Mohawk Bend for inviting her. Very fun and definitely worth the 30 dollars.

DailyMail: Break out the floppy hats! Mayim Bialik shares snaps of her reuniting with the cast of the Nineties sitcom Blossom

By JUSTIN ENRIQUEZ

They made big, floppy sunhats and the phrase ‘whoa’ cool during their run on NBC in the Nineties. But almost 20 years after their final episode aired, Mayim Bialik showed that the bonds made in a sitcom family are forever. The 38-year-old star shared a few snaps of her reuniting with the cast of Blossom to her 347K followers on Twitter Monday.

Mayim played the title role in the sitcom but also included in the snaps were cast members Jenna Von Oy, Michael Stoyanov, and Joey Lawrence.
The foursome got together as the Hub Television network is getting ready to air all five seasons of the show in July.

Jenna played Blossom’s BFF Six, while Joey and Michael played her older brothers on the show.

Iconic: Blossom had five seasons, which aired from 1990 to 1995

Mayim did not continue her acting career for 12 years after playing Blossom from 1990 to 1994 but decided to get back into acting after training to be a Neuroscientist, for financial reasons.

She recently told Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O on KIIS FM 1065: ‘I needed health insurance.

‘I had two small kids and I hadn’t really acted as an adult. I had done it when I was younger and I figured actors are never employed so I could see my kids all the time.’

The Hub will begin airing reruns of Blossom exclusively beginning July 7 at 10 p.m.

here was a Blossom reunion. Repeat, the cast of Blossom reunited! The show, which ran for five seasons on NBC from 1991-1995, is returning to the airwaves on The Hub Network. To celebrate, the cast got together to host a marathon.
Mayim Bialik, who played the titular hat-loving character, shared photos from the shoot on her social media pages. Sadly, no hats with large flowers on them appear to be present.

Joey Lawrence, Jenna von Oÿ and Michael Stoyanov joined Bialik at The Hub Network shoot. For good measure, here’s what they looked like back in the day. And for your listening pleasure, the Blossom theme song.

Touchstone Television

All five seasons of Blossom will be shown starting July 7 on The Hub Network. The show followed the Russo family as they adjusted to life after Blossom’s mother left. Lawrence played Joey, Blossom’s brother whose catchphrase was “Whoa!” and Stoyanov was the eldest brother, a recovering alcoholic who later became a paramedic. Von Oÿ played Six, Blossom’s fast-talking best friend.
“. @missmayim @JennavonOy @HubTVNetwork @MikeStoyanov so awesome being with u all again. Feels like no time has passed. Love you all,” Lawrence tweeted.

Bialik currently stars in CBS’ The Big Bang Theory, Lawrence headlines ABC Family’s Melissa and Joey, von Oÿ went on to star in The Parkers and is a blogger and Stoyanov has popped up on Justified and appeared in The Dark Knight. Ted Wass played patriarch Nick Russo was not at the reunion and has retired from acting. He’s stepped behind the camera and directs shows such as Undateable, 2 Broke Girls and even Melissa and Joey.

Robert Ramos Productions

Blossom is just the latest classic TV cast to reunite this summer. The Wonder Years cast previously assembled to record DVD special features. The cast of Nickelodeon’s Hey Dude, Roswell and Everwood also reunited at the ATX TV Festival in Austin.
