HOTFIX: Emmy Nomination Preview 2014 – Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Will Mayim Bialik or Merritt Wever take on ‘Modern Family’s’ Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara?

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Last Year’s Nominees:
Merritt Wever
Mayim Bialik
Julie Bowen
Jane Krakowski
Jane Lynch
Sofia Vergara
Anna Chlumsky

Attrition: With “30 Rock” gone, Jane Krakowski is gone (though she probably submitted as Guest Actress for her “Modern Family” visit). That still leaves six returning nominees from the extra-large field, including last year’s surprise winner, Merritt Wever. This is regularly one of the most difficult categories to predict in all of Emmydom. Last year I predicted Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Jane Krakowski and Mayim Bialik, which were easy, but I had Wever and Jane Lynch in the middle of the pack and Chlumsky was down amongst the Other Notable Candidates. And of the six returnees, I feel pretty confident that three or four will be back, but there could be room for several to drop out if voters are impressed with some very fine new comedies.

Mayim BIalik of ‘The Big Bang Theory’

Nomination Status: After two straight nods, she’s probably locked in.

In Her Favor: While that 2011 nomination for Johnny Galecki looks more and more like a one-off head-scratcher, I think that Mayim Bialik is settled in for annual nominations until Emmy voters start hating the show, which probably won’t happen until viewers start hating the show. Amy Farrah Fowler is a showy character, she gets to share many (but not all) of her scenes with Emmy juggernaut Jim Parsons and Bialik is really good, so who am I to quibble? In a wide open category, I think that Bialik‘s work in “The Locomotive Manipulation” and in the season-ending “The Status Quo Combustion” are very much good enough for Bialik to plausibly pull out a victory.

Working Against Her: The only thing going against Bialik are all of the new contenders for this category. I still suspect she’s pretty safe.

Well and Good NYC: Vegan actress Mayim Bialik shares two super simple side dishes

Saturday, June 14, 2014

Mayim Bialik’s been nominated for two Emmys for her role on The Big Bang Theory, but if you were a kid in the ’90s (guilty), she probably has a special place in your heart due to the sheer amazingness of her hats (I mean, acting!) on Blossom.

But beyond her television career, Bialik’s got a lot going on. The mom of two is a trained neuroscientist and has gotten lots of press for her advocacy of the very controversial Attachment Parenting.

She’s also a passionate vegan, and she recently teamed up with pediatrician Dr. Jay Gordon to create her first cookbook Mayim’s Vegan Table, which features super simple dishes meant to appeal to the palates of little ones and the time-sensitivities of busy adults. Here, she shares two you can get on the table in a flash. —Sarah Sarway

Gold Derby: Matt Jacobs (HuffPo) ‘anxious’ for Emmy battle: ‘Breaking Bad’ vs. ‘True Detective’

By Daniel Montgomery Jun 13 2014 15:47 pm

“I’m most anxious to see the ‘Breaking Bad’-‘True Detective’ battle play out,” says our latest Emmy expert Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post) about one of the season’s biggest awards rivalries. “Both are worthy of the big kahuna, so it’ll be interesting to see which prevails, or whether ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘The Good Wife’ or ‘House of Cards’ can trump all of them.”

Jacobs is an entertainment editor at the Huffington Post. A longtime pop-culture junkie, he says that he lives for awards season. After hightailing it out of Louisiana for New York City, he was a copy editor and TV writer at Metro New York. He has a degree in English literature from Louisiana State University, where he served as editor-in-chief of The Daily Reveille.

He currently predicts the “Bad”/”Detective” battle to end in victory for AMC’s defending champ in the Best Drama contest, and he’s also predicting a fourth Best Drama Actor win for Bryan Cranston. Jacobs ranks “True Detective” second in the top race, and also ranks its star Matthew McConaughey in the runner-up spot for Best Drama Actor behind Cranston.

Among comedies, he’s hoping for a strong showing by “Orange is the New Black”: “The well-timed airing of season two may help to amplify voters’ affection for the show. Kate Mulgrew and Uzo Aduba simply must get nominations.”

He’s betting on nominations for Mulgrew, Aduba, and Best Comedy Series, as well as for Comedy Actress contender Taylor Schilling and Comedy Guest Actress contender Laverne Cox, but he thinks “Modern Family” will prevail in the top category for a record-tying fifth year in a row.

Gold Derby: Joyce Eng (TV Guide) predicts Emmys for ‘Breaking Bad’ and Matthew McConaughey

By Daniel Montgomery Jun 13 2014 15:23 pm

“This year, I’m very curious to see how the drama races will shake out, mostly in series and lead actor,” says our newest Emmy Expert Joyce Eng (TV Guide). “Both fields are loaded and something’s got to give.”

Eng has been with TV Guide for six years and covers awards as well as a wide range of shows, including Emmy-winners “The Big Bang Theory,” “The Amazing Race,” and “Top Chef.”

She’s currently predicting a split decision in the top drama races, betting on defending champ “Breaking Bad” to win a farewell Emmy for Best Drama and Matthew McConaughey (“True Detective”) to swoop in to take Best Drama Actor away from three-time winner Bryan Cranston.

But she hopes the Emmys will also give FX’s “The Americans” a second chance after snubs in most top categories last year. “I think Keri Russell is their best shot,” she says, and she’s predicting Russell to break through with her first Drama Actress nomination.

Eng isn’t as optimistic about the top comedy categories: “I don’t want ‘Modern Family’ to match ‘Frasier’ [for the most Comedy Series wins], but right now, pre-nods, I can’t see anything beating it yet … I personally want ‘Veep’ to win. Season three was fantastic — the bathroom scene in ‘Crate’ was gold! — and it has all the makings of an Emmy-winning comedy, but it really needs to break into directing and/or writing this year.”

Will Eng get her wish?  Click Here to see her list of predictions.
